Massage the Stress!

Updated: Apr 22

You’ve now reached full maturity, you’ve left behind the most important steps of life, and now, when you could finally enjoy it fully and move forward at a more sustainable pace, you realize that stress still struggles to let go, and for one reason or another, your sleep is disturbed, and thoughts invade even the quietest moments… Does this sound familiar? And you really don’t know how to improve this situation?!

When I wrote this article, I thought about people who feel this way, and in these few lines, I will try to help you!

What’s happening to you is the result of an imbalance in part of your Nervous System called the Autonomic Nervous System. This system is divided into two parts: one keeps us awake, active, and alert, and when it is in excess, it produces Stress (through Cortisol), and the other allows us to rest, relax, and let go (through Dopamine). Our society seems to be increasingly imbalanced toward the first part of this system, called the Sympathetic Nervous System. The growing demands of life, our emotional needs often neglected, and an increasingly unstable world—socially and financially—activate this part of our nervous system, which is responsible for solving problems and anticipating “disasters.”

It’s an involuntary reaction, and even though it seems like we don’t have much to complain about, this part of us remains active, preventing us from accessing its opposite, the Parasympathetic Nervous System.

What happens is that this condition becomes almost normal to the point where we barely notice it anymore. It’s easy to blame old age, menopause, or our partner… :)

So, what can we do to rebalance our Autonomic Nervous System and return to a pleasant rhythm between sleep and wakefulness, rest and action, relaxation and tension? Well, there are several solutions: meditation, yoga, walks in the open air (especially in an island like Lanzarote), leisure trips, but one of these works in a particularly special way, producing immediate and noticeable effects: a good massage!

Do you want to know why? The stress produced by Cortisol settles and accumulates in the tensions of our muscles, to the point where we can no longer relax them. This dynamic, in addition to causing discomfort and pain, makes us live constantly tense and, as mentioned, stressed in search of problems that we probably will not be able to solve.

Thanks to a good relaxing massage, or even better, an holistic massage (holistic massages aim to rebalance this system), you will immediately feel a sense of relaxation and awakening, and with a massage just once a month, you will see a significant improvement in your physical and mental condition.
